10 ivory tusks recovered in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, police arrested five smugglers

Ten ivory tusks were recovered in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district in a joint raid by the forest department and local police on Wednesday and five people were arrested in this connection. Chaibasa’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Satyam Kumar said that the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau had informed about the purchase and sale of ivory on a large scale here. He said that on the basis of this information, Chaibasa Forest Department officials and district police raided Kumhar Toli area and recovered 10 ivory and arrested five people.

Suspected of being a member of an interstate gang

The forest department said in a statement that those arrested are from Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand. The statement said that the five accused appear to be members of an interstate gang involved in illegal ivory trade. He told that the market value of the recovered ivory is lakhs of rupees.

Even before this, after killing elephants in Chaibasa, the matter of pulling out their tusks had come to the fore. Taking action in this case, the police had arrested the smugglers. Apart from this, recently there was a suspicious death of a wild elephant in Latehar. The tusks of the dead elephant were also taken out.
