Terrorist Arrest: Twelve jihadis linked to Bangladesh-based terrorist group Ansarul Islam have been arrested from two districts of Assam. Seven other people from Morigaon district were also caught on suspicion of being contacts of the same organisation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that two major terror modules were busted in a “nationally coordinated operation” in the state. Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha said that of the 12 suspected jihadis, 10 were arrested from Jania area of ​​Barpeta district, while one was detained from Guwahati.

Morigaon district police chief Aparna Natarajan said another man, who runs a private madrassa in Soruchola village under Moirabari police station, was arrested and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He said the arrested Mufti Mustafa was allegedly involved in various financial transactions and anti-national activities related to Ansarul Islam. Ansarul Islam is an organization affiliated with Al-Qaeda (AQIS) in the Indian subcontinent. Seven others, who have been arrested by the police on suspicion of being linked to Ansarul Islam, are all teachers of another madrassa in the village.

Since 2019, Mustafa has had several financial transactions with Ansarul Islam members Amiruddin Ansari and Mamoon Rashid, who were arrested a few months ago in Kolkata and Barpeta respectively. Natarajan said that Mustafa’s bank accounts have been confiscated and the transactions in the accounts are being analyzed. During investigation, it has also been revealed that he had also given shelter to a ‘wanted person’ from other country in the madrasa who managed to escape.

The arrests have been made since Wednesday. Meanwhile, the chief minister told reporters that it was a “nationally coordinated operation” in which two major terror modules were busted in the state. Sarma said, “Some fundamentalists are active to destabilize Bangladesh and Assam. But we are on alert to nab them and destroy the module.” Sarma said that two days ago a youth from Assam was arrested in Bengaluru, while another person associated with the organization was nabbed from Bongaigaon in the state on Wednesday. went. He said the madrasa from which Mustafa was arrested is private and has been closed, adding that its students will be admitted to government schools.

Some time back in Assam all government madrasas have been closed. It was Barpeta where five alleged members of Ansarul Islam were arrested in March and since then, over 30 people linked to it have been apprehended. Ansarul Islam was earlier called Ansarul Bangla Team. Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said in March that they were involved in the killing of blog writers, artists, poets and those who were not following the path of radicalism or had independent views.
