Anahat Singh CWG 2022: The journey of the Indian contingent has begun to make a mark on the medal tally of the Commonwealth Games 2022. Amongst all the superstars and veteran athletes in the Indian contingent, there is a 14-year-old girl whose dreams of making the country proud are twinkling in her eyes. 14-year-old Anahat Singh studies in ninth and is making her Commonwealth Games debut. She is the youngest athlete in India to compete in a multi-sport event.
Anahata defeated many-year-old St. Vincent and Jeda Ross of the Grenadines 3-0 in three straight games in a round of 64 squash women’s singles match on Friday. The Indian player won the first game 11-5 and the second game 11-2, while in the third game, the opposing player could not even open the account in front of Anahata. Singh won the third game 11-0.
Anahata impressed the selectors with her excellent performance at the National Trials, which earned her a ticket to Birmingham. Anahata, a prodigious talent making her Commonwealth Games debut, has never participated in a major tournament before. On her situation, she said, “I was worried about sharing the camp with experienced players, but they are all very nice, they all helped me a lot.”
You will be surprised to know that squash was not the first game of choice for this girl. By the age of six, Anahata used to enjoy playing badminton more. Slowly, the thrill he got from squash attracted him and he started playing it at the age of eight. He started playing squash with his sister Amira from Delhi at Siri Fort.
Anahata says, “I used to train with my sister for 15 to 20 minutes. I was not too serious about squash as I was focusing on badminton. My sister Amira was participating in a squash tournament in Bengal where I also went along and participated. My performance in this game kept getting better so I got serious about it.
As soon as Anahata fell in love with the sport, she immediately started taking professional coaching and participated in various competitions across India. Anahata has won a total of 46 titles so far which includes 2 National titles and 8 International titles. Notably, Anahata is the first female athlete to win the British Junior Open 2019 and the US Junior Squash Open in 2021.
