Apple eyes United

California-based tech giant Apple and Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega, the world’s 19th-richest man, have reportedly shown interest in buying famous English football club Manchester United. The world’s biggest tech company is looking to add Manchester United to its portfolio with a potential £5.8 billion takeover from the owners of the Glazers, according to a report.

decision can be taken soon

The Manchester Evening News has reported that Ortega has already spoken to Old Trafford officials about his interest in buying United. Earlier, it was confirmed that the Glazers have decided to sell the club 17 years after the American family bought the Red Devils. The Glazers bought United in 2005, but later became extremely unpopular in the wake of the club’s involvement in the failed European Super League bid and subsequent criticism.

will bid first

Manchester United announced in a statement that the owners were exploring ‘strategic options’ and it is understood they will sell to the highest bidder. The Daily Star reported that the Glazers had initially set a price of £8.25million, but said this was unrealistic in the current market. According to the Daily Star, Apple bosses have expressed interest in discussing a possible deal to buy United.

Although Apple has no experience of owning a football club of United’s size, CEO Tim Cook is keen to explore the opportunities that owning United can provide. He will negotiate with the banks appointed to oversee the sale, including The Rhine Group.
