Odisha CBI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four persons, including the DGM of Orissa Stevedores Limited, in connection with a bribe of Rs 25 lakh involving a Chief Mechanical Engineer of Paradip Port Trust. The CBI official said that the Chief Mechanical Engineer of Paradip Port Trust, Saroj Kumar Das, through his associate Sumant Raut, had demanded Rs 60 lakh from the company as a bribe.
A ‘conveyor belt’ (a belt used to transport goods at a port) was damaged while unloading the company’s goods at the port. He said that Das had demanded a bribe in return for leaving the company without paying for its repairs. Officials said the CBI team has arrested Raut, Das, another person Shankh Shubhra Mitra and Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL) DGM Surya Narayan Sahu in this connection.
The cost of repairing the conveyor belt was put on the port trust by taking bribe
The official said the CBI has also named KCT Group’s Debapriya Mohanty, OSL director Chichit Mishra and private company Orissa Stevedores Ltd in the FIR. He said that during the raids conducted at 15 places, the CBI also seized Rs 84.5 crore. CBI said in a statement here, “It was alleged that the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of Paradip Port Trust (Odisha) was duped by his close associates for giving undue favors to various private stakeholders engaged in service and other activities at Paradip Port. There was a habit of asking and taking bribes through (Rout).”
The CBI alleges that the cost of repairing the conveyor belt damaged during unloading of OSL cargo was exorbitant and Das, in connivance with his associate Raut, middleman Mitra and director Sahu, inflicted the repair cost on the port trust, thereby The private company got a lot of financial benefits.
