Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian men’s table tennis team defeated Singapore 3-1 in the final to win the gold medal. In the last match, India’s Harmeet Desai defeated Chew 11-8, 11-5 and 11-6 to win the gold medal for India. Earlier, Sharath Kamal had lost in this match for India, but apart from him, G. Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai won their respective singles as well as double matches to put India’s fifth gold medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
This is the 11th medal and fifth gold medal for India in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Earlier, India’s women’s table tennis team, which was the defending champion, had to face an upset against Malaysia in the quarterfinals. But the men’s team did not give up and won the gold medal. This is India’s first medal in table tennis this time. Prior to this, 7 medals in weightlifting, 2 in judo and one medal in lawn ball.
What happened in the final match?
- India have taken a 1-0 lead over England in the final match of the men’s team event of table tennis. In the first match, Harmeed Desai and G. Sathiyan’s pair defeated the Singapore pair 13-11, 11-7 and 11-5.
- In table tennis, the Indian men’s team continues to compete against Singapore. In the second match of the final, which was a singles event, Anchat Sharath Kamal of India lost to Zhe Yu Cheu. Kamal lost the match 7-11, 14-12, 3-11, 9-11. Now the score is tied at 1-1. The first match was won by Indian doubles pair Sathiyan and Harmneet Desai.
- The score was reduced to 1-1 after the defeat of Sharath Kamal. But Ji Sathiyan beat Koen Pang 12-10, 7-11, 11-7 and 11-4 to extend India’s lead to 2-1. India is just one victory away from winning the gold medal.
- After this, Harmeet Desai of India came in the last match and he defeated Chew of Singapore 11-8, 11-5 and 11-6 to ensure India’s victory.
