All electronic circuits, which contain metal, have to be encased in an insulating and cooling base called a substrate. In almost every computing chip, this substrate is made of unrecyclable plastic polymers, which are often discarded when the chip eventually breaks down. It contributes to 50 million tonnes of electronic waste generated every year.

“The substrate can’t recycle itself, it’s very difficult,” says Martin Kaltenbrunner of the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. It’s also the largest part of electronics and has the lowest value, so if you have a few chips Obviously you would want to recycle them.

For this experiment, Kaltenbrunner and his colleagues used skin from the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum to act as a biodegradable electronic substrate. The fungus, which typically grows on rotting wood, forms a skin to protect its mycelium from foreign bacteria and other fungi. When the researchers extracted and dried this skin, they found that it was very flexible.

Describing its advantages, Martin says that it can be a good insulator, can withstand temperatures in excess of 200 °C (390 °F) and has the same thickness as a sheet of paper. It can be used as substrate.
