Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the yatra, expressed grief over the death of Seva Dal general secretary Krishnakant Pandey. He said that Pandey held the national flag till the last moment. Expressing condolences to Pandey’s family, Rahul Gandhi said, “His dedication towards the country will continue to inspire us.”
A senior district official said Pandey felt breathlessness and restlessness while walking with senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and others. They said Pandey was taken by ambulance to Shankar Nagar Primary Health Center where doctors declared him brought dead, the official said, adding that he was a resident of Nagpur. He told that his body was taken to the hospital for postmortem. Ramesh said that Pandey was holding the tricolor. Pandey was accompanying him and party veteran Digvijay Singh in the yatra.
Ramesh tweeted, “After a few minutes, as is the practice, he handed over the flag to a colleague and walked back. He then fell unconscious and was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was declared brought dead ” Ramesh said, “He was a staunch Congressman and used to take on the RSS in Nagpur. This is the saddest moment for all the yatris.” “Travellers, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and Rahul Gandhi paid last farewell to Krishna Kumar Pandey at the yatra halt at Atkali village in Nanded district this afternoon,” he said in another tweet.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan also condoled Pandey’s death and said the party has lost a loyal warrior. The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ reached Maharashtra on Monday night and entered its 62nd day on Tuesday. Hours after the Yatra entered Maharashtra from Telangana on Monday night, Rahul Gandhi visited Gurdwara Yadari Baba Zorawar Singh Ji Fateh Singh Ji on Guru Nanak Jayanti. The party tweeted that Rahul Gandhi offered prayers at the Gurudwara and prayed for harmony and equality.
Several senior leaders of Maharashtra Congress also joined the yatra on Tuesday. These leaders included former chief ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan, party’s state unit chief Nana Patole, besides Balasaheb Thorat, Manikrao Thackeray and Naseem Khan.
