CWG 2022: What happened in the track and field event on the ninth day of the Commonwealth Games had never happened before. Avinash Sable became the first Indian man to win a medal in the long distance competition at the Commonwealth Games by winning a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase while Priyanka Goswami became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the race walk. Sable broke his own national record to win the silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase competition while Priyanka Goswami won the silver medal in the 10,000m race walk competition. Prior to Sable, Kavita Raut won the bronze medal in the women’s 10,000m race walk at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Played for India in athletics on the ninth day i.e. Saturday was a good day. Goswami created new history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in the race walk. Sable broke his national record of 8:12.48 by clocking 8:11.20 seconds. He was just 0.5 seconds behind Kenya’s Abraham Kibivot. Amos Serem of Kenya won the bronze medal. Kibivot had finished fifth at the World Championships last month in Eugene and Sable was 11th. Before joining athletics, Sable, who was posted at Siachen in the Army service, finished fifth in the Diamond League. After winning the silver medal, Sable said, “My last lap was disappointing but I am happy that after a long time India won the medal in the long distance.”

Priyanka Goswami becomes first Indian woman to win medal in race walk

Like Sable, Goswami too clocked a personal best of 43:38.83 to finish second behind Australia’s Jemima Montag (42:34.30) in her event. Kenya’s Emily Wamusi Ngi (43:50.86) won the bronze medal. Goswami said after the win, “This is the first Commonwealth medal by an Indian woman in this category. I am very happy that I have created history.” Standing on the podium with a statue of Krishna in hand, Goswami said, “I have laddu gopals and every time I take them with me in competitions. I have painted on my nails the colors of the flags of the countries where I have played.

Indian athletics team has four medals with two silvers while India won one gold, silver and bronze in track and field at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Tejaswin Shankar has won bronze in high jump and Murali Sreeshankar has won silver in long jump.
