CWG 2022: Indian athletes have had a strong connection with UK soil at the Commonwealth Games. Whenever the UK has hosted the Games, the best performance of Indian players has come to the fore. In such a situation, it is bound to expect good performance from Indian athletes in the Commonwealth Games starting from 28 July in Birmingham. India has so far participated in the Commonwealth Games on British soil five times and has given better results than its previous performances every time except in the 2014 Games in Glasgow.
India got its first medal in Britain
India participated in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 1934 which was held in London. India then participated in only two sports, athletics and wrestling. Wrestler Rashid Anwar won India’s first medal of these Games by winning the bronze medal in 74kg.
India got its first gold in Britain
India won two gold medals for the first time in the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales. The first gold medal for India was won by Flying Sikh Milkha Singh and the second gold was won by wrestler Leela Ram. Wrestler Laxmi Kant Pandey won silver medal in these games. The special thing is that India had not won any medal before in Sydney (1938) and Vancouver (1954).
India won more than 10 medals in Britain for the first time
In 1970 Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland in Britain in which India won 12 medals. These include five gold medals. India won all its five gold and all three silver medals in wrestling. For India then wrestlers Ved Prakash, Sudesh Kumar, Uday Chand, Mukhtiar Singh and Harishchandra Birajdar won gold. The Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh in 1986, in which India did not participate.
India’s best performance on British soil in 2002
In 2002, the Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester on British soil and India then gave its best performance till that time. In Manchester 2002, India was successful in winning a total of 69 medals including 30 gold medals. India then finished fourth in the Games after Australia, hosts England and Canada. In Manchester itself, the Indian women’s hockey team created history by winning the gold medal by defeating England 3-2 in the final. India had won 14 gold shooting in Manchester but the sport has not been included in Birmingham 2022 which could be India’s biggest loss.
