CWG 2022 INDW vs AUSW: The Indian women’s cricket team has lost to Australia in the first match of Group A. India had a good start in the first match of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games but Kangaroo player Ashleigh Gardner snatched the victory from India’s hands. In this match, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Shefali Verma performed amazingly in the batting. In the bowling, Renuka Singh Thakur broke the back of the kangaroos by giving the first four blows. But this hard work of these players got washed away.

Earlier, winning the toss, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur decided to bat first. In the allotted 20 overs, the team scored 154 runs for 8 wickets. Chasing the target of 155 runs, Australia had a very poor start and half the team returned to the pavilion for 49 runs. After this, Esleigh Gardner and Grace Haris added 51 runs for the sixth wicket. Meghna then dismissed Haris and in the next over, Deepti sent Jess Jonasson to the pavilion.

Harmanpreet and Renuka’s hard work turned water

The match seemed to be in the hands of India. But Gardner stood holding one end and kept the tension on the faces of the Indian players. Alana King also played her well and led the team to victory easily. The Indian team held on to the match from the beginning but weakened that hold in the end and the Kangaroo team took full advantage of it. Gardner scored an unbeaten 52 and King scored 18 runs. Both of them won the team by 3 wickets in the first 19 overs itself.

Talking about India’s performance, Harmanpreet Kaur did an amazing job in batting. He played a half-century innings of 52 runs. Apart from this, Renuka Singh Thakur had strengthened India’s hold on the match in the bowling. He took the first four wickets in his name, due to which half of Australia’s team was bowled out for 49 runs. But after this Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Haris then the pair of Gardner and King gave Australia victory by taking the match away from India’s grip.

India will now face arch-rivals Pakistan on July 31. After this, on August 3, the team will take on Barbados. The Indian team is present in Group A along with Australia, Pakistan and Barbados. The final match and bronze medal match of this tournament will be played on 7 August. Women’s cricket has got a place in the Commonwealth Games for the first time.
