CWG 2022: Indian swimmer Srihari Natarajan has made it to the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke event on the first day of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. While other swimmers Kushagra Rawat in 400m freestyle and Sajan Prakash in 50m butterfly failed to make it to the next rounds of competition. The cycling teams, on the other hand, disappointed and the Commonwealth Games campaign started with a dismal start. The Indian men’s sprint team of Ronaldo Latonjam, Y Rojit Singh, David Beckham Elkatohchungo could not make it to the medal round after finishing sixth in the qualification with a total time of 44.702 seconds.

What was the update of swimming?

Srihari Natraj clocked 54.68 seconds to enter the semi-finals of the men’s 100m backstroke event. Natraj, 21, from Bengaluru, was the third fastest swimmer in his heat and the fifth fastest overall. Had he been able to repeat his best performance of 53.77 seconds, he would have topped the heat. South Africa’s Peter Koje finished top with a timing of 53.91 seconds. Sajan Prakash and Kushagra Rawat, playing for the first time, could not reach the semi-finals in their respective categories.

Prakash finished eighth in the heat, clocking 25.01 seconds in the men’s 50m butterfly. The top 16 swimmers have advanced to the semi-finals. Sharad finished last in his heat in the men’s 400m freestyle with a timing of 57.45 seconds. Kushagra and Prakash will now challenge in the second category. Prakash will compete in the men’s 100m and 200m butterfly, while Kushagra will compete in the men’s 1500m freestyle and 200m freestyle.

Cycling teams fail to make it to the finals

The Indian cycling team had a disappointing start to its Commonwealth Games campaign with all three teams failing to make it to the finals on Friday. The Indian men’s sprint team of Ronaldo Latonjam, Y Rojit Singh, David Beckham Elkatohchungo could not make it to the medal round after finishing sixth in the qualification with a total time of 44.702 seconds. The Indian team finished 2.480 seconds behind the table toppers Australia.

The women’s sprint team performed worse than the men’s team. The team finished seventh in the qualifying round with a total time of 51.433. The Indian men’s 4000m chase team of Venkappa Kengalgutti, Dinesh Kumar and Vishwajeet Singh finished sixth in the qualification and finished last with a total time of 4:12.865. The Indian men’s 4000m Pursuit team finished sixth and last in the qualification with a timing of 4:12.865 seconds.
