CWG 2022: Vikas Thakur of India has won the silver medal in the 96 kg category weightlifting of the Commonwealth Games 2022 released in Birmingham. He won the medal by lifting a total of 346 kg (191 clean and jerk and 155 snatches). This is overall 12th medal for India and 8th medal in weightlifting. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achint Shivali have won gold medals in weightlifting for India.

India’s heavyweight weightlifter Vikas Thakur clinched another Commonwealth Games medal in India’s bag with a silver medal. The veteran Thakur lifted a total of 346kg (155kg and 191kg) to finish second, winning his third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal. This is Thakur’s second silver medal in the Commonwealth Games. He had also finished second in the 2014 Glasgow Games while he won a bronze medal in 2018 at the Gold Coast.

Samoa’s Don Opeloghe lifted the gold medal with a record-breaking performance lifting a total of 381 kg (171 kg and 210 kg) and improved on his 2018 performance where he won the silver medal. Fiji’s Teniela Tuisuwa Rainibogi won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 343 kg (155 kg and 188 kg). Thakur, a five-time Commonwealth Championships medalist, lifted 149kg, 153kg and 155kg in three attempts in the snatch to finish joint third in the category.

In clean and jerk, Thakur started by lifting 187 kg. In the second attempt, he had to struggle a bit to lift the 191 kg weight but the Punjab lifter was successful in this attempt and celebrated it by hitting his thigh which has been popularized by Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan. After being assured of a silver medal, Thakur attempted to lift 198 kg in his last attempt, which was one kg more than his personal best. He, however, failed to lift the weight.
