Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman during the T20 World Cup in Australia. At present, the case is still going on against him, but on Thursday the relief news came for the cricketer that he was granted bail. However, certain conditions have also been imposed on him during the trial. In particular, he has been banned from using social media accounts. Significantly, during the World Cup, a Sydney woman accused the cricketer of sexual harassment. After which 31-year-old Gunathilaka was arrested on November 6 morning on charges of alleged sexual harassment.
The suspended Gunathilaka was in custody at the ‘Parkalia Correctional Centre’ since he was denied bail on November 7, reported PTI. He appeared in Sydney’s Downing Center Court via video link from there. According to the report, “Magistrate Janet Wahlquist granted bail to Gunathilaka at Sydney’s Downing Center Court on Thursday in which he appeared by ‘audiovisual link’ from Parkalia Jail.” It had opposed the grant of bail to Gunathilaka on the grounds that she could be a threat to the safety of the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons. Gunathilaka is facing four cases for having sex without consent. Huh.
Must comply with these conditions
The Sri Lankan cricketer has been granted bail but some conditions have also been kept. Including a ban on the use of Tinder, social media and dating apps, bail conditions include paying 150,000 Australian dollars ($100,620), ‘surrendering’ the passport, reporting to the police twice, ‘curfew’ from 9 pm to 6 am. ’ and not contacting the complainant. At the same time, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board had suspended Gunathilaka from all formats of cricket immediately after his arrest as soon as the matter came to light.
Citing police documents, the report said Gunathilaka repeatedly strangled the victim during the sexual assault because he was afraid of being caught. Gunathilaka can face a maximum sentence of 14 years if the charge is proved. According to information received from local media, Gunathilaka and the complainant were in contact with each other for the past several days through an online dating app. The left-handed batsman Gunathilaka played in Sri Lanka’s first round match against Namibia in the World Cup and was dismissed without opening the account. After this, he had to be ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The Sri Lankan team qualified for the Super 12 round but finished fourth in Group I.
Gunatilaka has been surrounded by controversies in the past as well
Gunatilaka has an old association with controversies. Earlier, on the tour of England in 2021, along with his teammates Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella, he was suspended for a year by the Sri Lankan board for violating the team’s bio bubble rules. In 2018 too, the board had banned him for 6 months for violating team rules. In the same year, Gunathilaka had to face suspension after an unknown friend of his was accused of raping a Norwegian woman. In 2017 as well, the board had suspended Gunathilaka for six limited overs matches for skipping a practice session and arriving for a match without his cricket gear. Gunathilaka has played eight Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka.
