The Supreme Court on Thursday raised serious questions on the process adopted for the appointment of Arun Goel as Election Commissioner. The court said that his file was cleared in “haste”. The Supreme Court said that the file relating to Goyal’s appointment was passed “very quickly”. At the same time, in this case, the Center through Attorney General R Venkataramani asked the court to “stay a while” and requested to look into the matter in detail. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph said, “What kind of assessment is this?” We are not questioning the qualification of Arun Goyal but the process.

Supreme Court doubts the process

The top law officer told the bench, “Please wait a while. I appeal to you to look into the matter in detail.” The Center placed before the bench the original file of Goyal’s appointment as Election Commissioner as directed by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, which was perused by the court. The bench noted that Goyal, a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer, took voluntary retirement from service (VRS) on the same day, the Law Ministry passed his file, presented a list of four names to the Prime Minister. Goyal’s name was approved by the President within 24 hours. The bench is hearing petitions seeking a collegium-like mechanism for the appointment of the Election Commissioner and the Chief Election Commissioner.

Sanjay Raut also raised questions
At the same time, the reaction of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) leader Sanjay Raut has also come to the fore. Sanjay Raut said that the democracy of the country is in the hands of the Election Commission and if such an institution works as someone’s slave and if they (the government) are appointed as per their wish, then there will be no democracy in this country. Why is it that no Election Commissioner is able to complete his term?
