Our Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15th August. Because on this day in the year 1947, the country got independence from the British. However, he went away after dividing the country into two pieces. Due to which a new country named Pakistan came into existence. Meanwhile, talking about the map and boundaries of India, it has changed a lot in the last 75 years. The process of changing the boundaries of the states within the country has continued even after independence.

In India, new states have been formed from time to time according to the need and demand. In 2019 itself, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were recognized as two union territories, separating them. 1961- On December 19, 1961, Goa was liberated by the Indian Army and it became a part of India.

1962 – Puducherry (earlier Pondicherry) officially joined India.
1975 – Sikkim joined India. As per the 1947 treaty, the independence of Sikkim was upheld. It was recognized as the 22nd state of India on 16 May.

The princely states who had opposed

After independence, there were many princely states in the country. Some of whom wanted to join Pakistan and some wanted autonomous rule. which was not possible geographically. Due to continuous efforts by the government, princely states like Kashmir, Hyderabad, Junagadh, Manipur and Tripura were included in India between 1947-1949. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. It was formally converted into a republic. Till this time India was delineated in territorial boundaries. Not in small states.

India till 1953

In 1953, Andhra State demanded a separate state for Telugu speakers. After which the State Reorganization Commission was constituted. Till 1956, there were 14 states and 6 union territories in the country. Then soon the demand for separate states on the basis of language started rising in the country. The first sound arose in Madras.

Due to the movements, states started being formed. However, the recommendation of the Reorganization Commission was that the states should not be formed on the basis of language. When the Samyukta Maharashtra movement and the Maha Gujarat movement boomed, Bombay State was bifurcated in 1960. After which Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence.
Similarly, the Akali Dal had started the Punjabi Suba Movement. Due to which Punjab was created for Punjabi speakers. Whereas the Hindi speaking or Hindu majority area became Haryana.
Himachal Pradesh was earlier included in the state of Punjab itself. Which was later given the status of a separate state.

Changes happened in the 70-80s in the Northeast

During this time insurgent incidents started increasing in the northeastern part of the country. After which the central government had to take some tough decisions. Earlier Manipur and Meghalaya were recognized as separate states.
1972- Meghalaya and Mizoram were separated from Assam.
1963 – Nagaland was recognized as a state.
1975 – The autonomous rule of Sikkim ended and that too was merged with India.
1987- Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur were given full statehood. Earlier these were union territories.

1987- Daman and Diu was carved out of Goa and given the status of a Union Territory.
In the early 2000s, Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand from Bihar and Chhattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh.
2014- Telangana was born as a separate state from Andhra Pradesh after a prolonged agitation.
2019- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were bifurcated to form two union territories.

These could be the states of the future

Despite 75 years of independence, the demand for a separate state is still rising. According to the information, there is a demand to separate Kargil in Ladakh. At the same time, there is a demand to separate Kutch and Saurashtra from Gujarat. Vidarbha and Marathwada are demanding separate state in Maharashtra. Protests are seen in West Bengal regarding Gorkhaland.
