- 1,472 posts of IAS are vacant in various states
- 864 Vacancies of Indian Police Service (IPS)
- The annual recruitment number of IAS officers increased
IAS vacant post: The government told Parliament on Thursday that as on January 1, 2022, 1,472 posts of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and 864 posts of Indian Police Service (IPS) are vacant in various states. Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Upper House. He said that in order to ensure optimum recruitment of IAS officers, the Government has increased the annual recruitment strength of IAS officers to 180 through Civil Services Examination from the year 2012 on the basis of Baswan Committee recommendations.
Singh said the committee had also recommended that any number more than 180 would result in compromise of quality. It said that this number would be more than the capacity of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) and would lead to distortion in the career pyramid of IAS officers, especially senior positions in the Government of India. He said that from 2020 onwards, the number of posts to be recruited for IPS through Civil Services Examination has been increased to 200.
Vacancy and filling up of posts is a continuous process
The Minister of State for Personnel informed that as on January 1, 2022, there are 1472 vacancies in IAS and 864 in IPS in various states. The Union Minister said that the creation and filling up of vacancies is a continuous process. It is the endeavor of the government to fill up the vacancies in the cadres. Union Public Service Commission conducts Civil Services Examination every year to fill vacancies in IAS and IPS category on direct recruitment basis.
