IPL 2023 Retention: Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels it will be difficult for five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians to release T20 legend and former West Indies cricketer Kieron Pollard ahead of the mini-auction to be held in Kochi on December 23. Pollard was bought by Mumbai in 2009 and emerged as a legend with the team, playing a key role in winning the IPL title on all five occasions. But Pollard failed to maintain his dominance in IPL 2022. They sat in three matches of the previous season, taking the team to the bottom of the points table.

Mumbai to release Pollard

Harbhajan said, “Well, I think it is going to be very difficult for Mumbai Indians to release Kieron Pollard. He has been with the franchise for many years. But yes, there are times when you have to make some tough decisions. And maybe this is the time. Looking for some better player to move on and build a team for the next 4-5 years, which Pollard has done over the years. Harbhajan, a former member, feels there are options from the Mumbai side as well as in the mini-auctions that can play the role Pollard has played in the past.

Bhajji said before the auction

He said, “Yes, they have Tim David, who can do a similar thing and of course, there is another Australian in the auction, who is Cameron Green. I think they want him to be part of the Mumbai team. Will be watching. Of course, it’s going to be a tough decision, but at some stage or the other, you have to take those decisions.”

Mumbai bought England pacer Jofra Archer for Rs 8 crore in the IPL mega auction despite being unavailable for IPL 2022 due to an elbow injury. With Jasprit Bumrah also ruled out of the T20 World Cup recovering from a back injury, former India left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan feels Mumbai needs to buy a death bowler in the mini-auction.
