Japan Open 2022: On the third day of Japan Badminton Open 2022, Indian player HS Prannoy made a big upset, while Kidambi Srikanth was out after losing. Prannoy knocked out Singapore’s star player Loh Keen Yiu in straight sets in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals. World No. 8 Prannoy defeated eighth-seeded U 22-20, 21-19 in 44 minutes here. This Indian player had reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship last week. This is Prannoy’s third win in four matches against the Singaporean. Prannoy, 30, will take on Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in the last eight. Prannoy has beaten Chen in the last two matches, but is 3-4 behind the Chinese in the overall record.

Srikanth’s journey ends

Srikanth, who defeated world No. 5 Malaysian Lee Ji Jia on Wednesday, however, could not continue his good run and went down 10-21, 16-21 to local player and world No. 17 Kanta Tsuneyama. Earlier, these two players had faced each other in the Korean Open in 2019 and even then the Japanese player was successful in winning.

Prannoy made a brilliant comeback in both the games against Loh. He was trailing 11-19 in the first game and 6-14 in the second. The Indian got off to a good start but soon lost his momentum. His opponent, after trailing 7-8, took an 11-8 lead till the break. Loh continued to dominate even after this and at one point he was in a position to win the first game. Prannoy then scored six consecutive points.

Loh once had three game points but made two mistakes that gave the Indian a chance to come back. Loh got off to a great start in the second game as well and was leading 11-4 at one point but Prannoy again displayed a stellar example of his belligerence and soon leveled the score at 16-16. The Indian player quickly got two match points out of which the Singapore player was able to defend only one.
