Hitting out at the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday said it was Nehru’s historical mistake to take the Kashmir issue to a multilateral forum. Hardeep Singh Puri said, “Why was the Kashmir issue taken to an international or multilateral forum? To the best of my knowledge, Maharaja Hari Singh was pleased to sign the merger letter at that time and as a student of history, this is what I have read.
“But the political leadership in Delhi was saying that they wanted this merger in a more comprehensive manner and therefore were in favor of a plebiscite,” he said. So they wanted to take it to a multilateral platform. Nothing can be greater than this. I am using the word naani in a very general way.” He said, “It was a mistake, or a decision. You can call it a mistake done by the person but you cannot justify it.

‘Pakistan is spreading disturbances in Kashmir because of Nehru’s mistake’
He said that the historical fact is in front of you that going to the multilateral forum or asking for a plebiscite was not foolish but it was a terrible mistake. The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister said that it was Nehru’s fault due to which Pakistan is creating disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir. He said, “Because you made a mistake, others are taking advantage of it. A country is using terrorism as a policy. I said so 20 years ago. I said this is a problem created from across the border, but they can create this problem because someone from our side has given them an opportunity to do so.
