Jeremy Lalrinnunga: India has got the second gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 released in Birmingham. India’s weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga has won this gold medal for the country. He led India to a gold medal in the 67kg category with two game records. He got injured in clean and jerk and fell on the board due to pain, but even in pain, the Indian lifter wrote this new record of victory and got his name recorded in golden letters on the pages of history.
Talking about Jeremy, this 19-year-old weightlifter has already won the gold medal in the Youth Olympics in 2018. After this, he also won the gold medal for the first time in the Commonwealth Games. Jeremy won the gold medal in the category of 67 kg by lifting a total weight of 300 kg (in snatch and clean and jerk). He set two new game records by lifting 140 kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk.
Boxer father’s brave son
Weightlifter Jeremy Lalnihunga also has a special connection to boxing. He is the son of national level boxer Lalnehatluanga. Jeremy also tried his hand at boxing but later he joined weightlifting. Because he felt that to be successful in weightlifting, only strength was needed, which made him attracted to it. Jeremy beat Samoa’s Waipawa Niewo Ion 293kg (127kg and 166kg) and Nigeria’s Ididiong Joseph Umoafia 290kg (130kg and 160kg) to bag silver and bronze medals respectively.

19-year-old Jeremy from Aizawl (Mizoram) holds the sports record for snatch (140kg) and total weight (300kg). During this, he also avoided getting injured as he appeared in severe pain twice during the clean and jerk attempt. Jeremy lifted 140kg in his second attempt at the snatch to create a massive 10kg lead over his nearest rival, Ididiong. He started with an effort of 136kg. Jeremy tried to lift 143 kg in the last attempt but failed and fell on the same elbow.
Jeremy, the winner of the 2021 Commonwealth Championships in clean and jerk, started with a lift of 154kg and lifted 160kg in his second attempt. He could not lift 165 kg in his last attempt. This is India’s fifth medal in weightlifting and overall in these games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (Gold), Sanket Sargar (Silver), Bindiyarani Devi (Silver) and Gururaj Pujari (Bronze) won medals on Saturday.
