Jeremy Lalrinnunga: India’s 19-year-old weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga on Sunday created history at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal in the 67kg category. On this achievement, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu have given congratulatory messages. Congratulating Jeremy, the PM said that he has made the country proud at a very young age. At the same time, President Murmu said that, by making a place on the podium, you have made crores of Indians proud.
Talking about PM Modi’s entire congratulatory message to Jeremy, he tweeted, “Our youth power is creating history! Congratulations to Jeremy who won a gold medal in his very first Commonwealth Games and made a great record in the Commonwealth Games. So much so. He made the country proud at a young age. Wishing him all the best for future competitions.” Youth Olympics 2018 champion Jeremy dominated the men’s 67kg category with two new records lifting a total of 300kg (140kg and 160kg).
On the other hand, the country’s President Draupadi Murmu congratulated Jeremy, the 19-year-old golden boy of India, saying, “Congratulations to Jeremy Lalrinnunga for winning the gold medal in weightlifting in the Commonwealth Games. You have created history because of your confidence despite injury during the event. You have inspired millions and millions of people. Your place on the podium made Indians proud.”
Jeremy took part in the Commonwealth Games for the first time. He beat Samoa’s Waipawa Niewo Ion 293kg (127kg and 166kg) and Nigeria’s Ididiong Joseph Umoafia 290kg (130kg and 160kg) who bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively. Earlier on Saturday, Mirabai Chanu had successfully defended her title winning the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as expected with a gold medal in the 49kg category.
India got five medals in weightlifting
India has so far won 5 medals in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, including two gold medals. These five medals of India have come from weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga have won gold medals. Apart from them, Sanket Sargar and Bindya Devi Rani won the Silver Medal and Gururaj Pujari won the Bronze Medal. The 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games has been the best for India so far where the country had 101 medals and India was second in the table.
