The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday decided to promulgate an ordinance to remove Governor Arif Mohammad Khan from the post of chancellor of state universities. At Kannur University, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s personal secretary K. Of. There has been a long-standing dispute between the two leaders, objecting to the appointment of Ragesh’s wife Priya Varghese.

The Kerala High Court has also stayed the appointment till the final disposal of the matter. Since then, the tension between the two giants has intensified. The decision of the cabinet to bring an ordinance has come to the fore after this controversy. However, even Governor Khan is in no mood to back down. So it remains to be seen how he handles the situation. Two bills sent to him after the hurriedly convened special session in September are still lying on his table.

‘Not interested in becoming chancellor’

According to informed sources, one of the reasons for the Pinarayi Vijayan government’s decision to bring an ordinance is that when the tussle broke out recently, an angry Khan had said that he was not interested in becoming the chancellor. He also said that if any ordinance or bill is brought, he will happily sign it.

On hearing about the ordinance, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satisan said the Congress-led opposition would not be in favor of it under any circumstances. “This cannot happen in Kerala, because if this becomes a law, all appointments including vice chancellors, employees will be done from the CPI(M) state party headquarters,” he said.

This is the first time that such a law is being introduced since the formation of Kerala in 1956, when the Legislative Assembly through a bill made the governor the chancellor of universities in the state. The governor is the chancellor in 14 universities.
