Justice D.Y., who was sworn in as the country’s 50th Chief Justice (CJI) on Wednesday. Chandrachud has been a part of benches giving decisions in important cases like Ayodhya dispute, right to privacy. Justice Chandrachud, the longest serving CJI in the country, Justice Y. V. is the son of Chandrachud. His father was the Chief Justice of India from 22 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. This is the first time in the more than seven-decade-long history of the Supreme Court of India that the son of a former Chief Justice has held the position. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Chandrachud will hold the post for two years till November 10, 2024. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court retires at the age of 65. He has replaced Justice Uday Umesh Lalit. Who recommended him to be made his successor on 11 October. The President appointed him as the next CJI on October 17. Justice Lalit’s term ended on November 8, a position he held for only 74 days.

A bench headed by Justice Chandrachud had last year termed the second wave of the global pandemic as a “national crisis”, and also issued several directions to deal with it and to remove the hardships of the people. Justice Chandrachud was also part of a five-judge constitution bench that paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. The bench had passed the verdict unanimously and directed the Center to allot five acres of land to the Suni Waqf Board for the construction of the mosque.
