News: Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday urged Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to drop the ruling party’s remarks about Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the Upper House as Union ministers flouted parliamentary procedures and practice has been violated. Kharge says that the issue related to the addressing of President Draupadi Murmu as ‘national wife’ by Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was raised by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Leader of the Upper House Piyush Goyal on Thursday and during which both of them spoke to Sonia. Mentioned Gandhi who is not a member of Rajya Sabha.

Kharge wrote a letter to the Chairman

Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Naidu saying that you yourself are well aware of parliamentary procedures and conventions. It has been a convention that in this House no mention or critical remarks are made about the other House or its members. The senior Congress leader also referred to excerpts from Sitharaman’s and Goyal’s remarks in the letter and said the question of privileges of a member of the other House cannot be raised in this House. Kharge said that I urge you to remove from the record the comments made by Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal on July 28 with reference to Sonia Gandhi. I also urge that both the ministers apologize as they have violated parliamentary procedures and conventions.

Regarding Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remark, the Finance Minister had said in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, “It is an insult to the President. this is unacceptable. Congress and its president should apologize for this.” Leader of the House Piyush Goyal also surrounded the Congress in the Rajya Sabha on this subject. He had demanded an apology from the Congress President on the subject and asked, “Does the Congress want to confine the President’s post to caste-line.”
