Modi-Mamata Meeting: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. This high level meeting took place in PM House. In this meeting, he raised several issues related to his state, including GST dues and timely release of funds under various schemes by the Centre. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has shared a picture of the meeting that lasted for about an hour.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Banerjee said she has sought intervention several times with regard to the immediate release of funds to the state due to the implementation of the Rural Employment Scheme-MNREGA, PM-Awas Yojana and PM-Gramin Sadak Yojana. He said that the amount payable to the state under these schemes is now around Rs 17,996.32 crore.

After the meeting, Banerjee went to meet President Draupadi Murmu.

In her memorandum, Banerjee has presented the details of the total amount to be given to the state under various schemes and benefits. The fund outstanding by the Central Government to the State as on July 31, 2022 is estimated to be around Rs 1,00,968.44 crore. Banerjee has several times accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government of delaying the payment of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to states, especially those ruled by opposition parties. After meeting PM Modi, Banerjee went to meet President Draupadi Murmu.

Mamta may attend NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting

Banerjee, who arrived in Delhi on Thursday on a four-day visit, is likely to attend the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting to be chaired by PM Modi on August 7. She did not attend the meeting last year. Banerjee’s meeting with the PM comes at a time when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee. However, it is not known whether the issue was discussed in the meeting.

Banerjee’s meeting with Modi assumes significance as the vice-presidential election will be held on August 6, from which her Trinamool Congress party (TMC) has decided to stay away. The BJP-led NDA has fielded former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as the vice presidential candidate, while the opposition parties have fielded Margaret Alva.
