Earlier in September, Nitin Gadkari had said that the government was working on the development of electric highways through solar power. Addressing an event organized by industry body Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Gadkari had reiterated that the government wants to make the country’s public transport system electric. “The government is encouraging the development of solar and wind energy based charging systems for electric vehicles,” he said.

Nitin had said, “We are also working on the development of electric highways. It will be powered by solar energy. This will facilitate on-the-go charging of trucks and buses with heavy freight carrying capacity. An electric highway means a road that supplies electricity to vehicles traveling on it. Gadkari said that the road ministry is also encouraging toll plazas to be run on solar energy. He said that a well developed infrastructure enhances economic activities, creates new companies and increases employment opportunities. “We are building 26 new expressways.”
