Piyush Goyal: Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said the government cannot interfere in the working of law enforcing agencies and they are doing their job. Amid uproar by opposition members against the misuse of central agencies during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Goyal also said that those who violate the law have to bear the brunt. “We (members of parliament) are law makers and those who break the law bear the brunt,” Goyal said.

“I would request that the law take its course. The government cannot interfere in the working of law enforcing agencies. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday arrested Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of a chawl in Mumbai. Members of opposition parties, including Shiv Sena, were creating a ruckus demanding a discussion in the Upper House on the issue of misuse of central agencies in the wake of Raut’s arrest.

Party member Priyanka Chaturvedi had also given adjournment notice for immediate discussion on the issue. The Zero Hour could not be held due to the uproar and when the proceedings started at 12 noon after the first adjournment, the same scene was witnessed in the House. Amid the uproar, Goyal urged the opposition members to allow the House to function smoothly, citing important legislative business. He said that the people of the opposition were demanding discussion on the issue of inflation and it is to be discussed in Lok Sabha today while in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He said that the opposition has assured us that as soon as the date of discussion is fixed, they will allow the business to be done in the house.
