Congress Allegation: The Congress on Wednesday claimed that at the behest of the Narendra Modi government, the Delhi Police has cordoned off its headquarters, the residences of party president Sonia Gandhi and former president Rahul Gandhi and that its leaders are being “treated like terrorists” in retaliation. And there is the politics of intimidation. The main opposition party also claimed that this “fearful government” has done this whole exercise to thwart its proposed August 5 protest against inflation and unemployment and to divert the attention of the people. On the other hand, the police say that there was information that protesters may gather at the Congress headquarters, so this step was taken as a precautionary measure so that no unwanted situation arises.

We are not afraid of this policy of BJP – Jairam Ramesh

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh told reporters, “What is happening today is politics of vengeance and intimidation. But there is a saying, ‘intellect against destruction’. At this time inflation, unemployment, is the destruction of GST. Now to stop our protest on August 5, the Home Minister and Delhi Police have started from today itself. Those who spread the atmosphere of fear, they are afraid. We are not to be afraid.

We will not bow down to government’s pressure: Ajay Maken

Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken said, “On August 5, it was decided to protest against inflation, unemployment and imposition of GST on food items. Today a letter came from DCP that you guys cannot hold any protest. This evening the Congress headquarters was converted into a cantonment. The residence of Sonia ji and Rahul ji is guarded by the police.” He said that no matter how much pressure the government exerts, we will not go back on our decision to protest against inflation, unemployment and GST.

BJP is doing politics of the worst level – Abhishek Manu Singhvi

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “India is the world’s largest democracy and it is sad to have a ‘seizure mentality’. The purpose of this whole exercise is to humiliate and intimidate on the one hand and on the other hand to divert and mislead the important issues. The whole country is watching that on which side the ED is being used against the leadership of the country’s oldest party. This is a fearful government.” Singhvi claimed, “You (government) are treating this institution, this party, these leaders like terrorists. This is the lowest level of politics to divert attention.

Jairam Ramesh targeted the government by tweeting

Earlier, Ramesh tweeted, “Blocking of road by Delhi Police to the headquarters of All India Congress Committee is now a common practice rather than an exception. He has now done the same thing again which is mysterious.” He also shared a video outside the Congress headquarters at ’24 Akbar Road’ in which several policemen are seen. Ramesh claimed that at the behest of the government, the police have cordoned off the Congress headquarters, residences of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

On Congress’s claim, a senior police officer said, “We got information from our special branch that protesters may gather at the Congress headquarters. Therefore, a precautionary step has been taken. We have put up barricades and deployed policemen so that no untoward situation arises.” Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate “temporarily sealed” the premises of the Young Indian Company at the National Herald’s office in Delhi. Earlier, the ED had questioned Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the money laundering case related to ‘National Herald’.
