A shocking news has come out from Dumka, Jharkhand. Tribal students of a government-run Scheduled Tribe residential school on Monday thrashed their maths teacher and a clerk by tying them to a tree for giving low marks in the Class 9 practical examination.
After this, the students uploaded the video of the entire incident on social media. The local authorities took cognizance of the matter after the video went viral. Of the 32 students in the class, 11 had got a grade DD (double D), which is considered the equivalent of failing. The results were declared by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) on Saturday.
The beating of school teacher Kumar Suman was recorded on a mobile phone and shown live on social media. The students did not even let their teacher know about their intentions. He told the teacher and the clerk that he wanted to ask them about ways to do better in studies and that’s why he was calling them. The clerk had refused to tell the students their numbers.
As soon as the teacher and the clerk reached the spot, the students tied them to a tree and started beating them with sticks. While beating up the two, the students openly said that they would post the video live on social media. The injured teacher is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Describing his ordeal to India TV, the teacher said that he had no idea that his students would treat him like this. Kumar Suman said, he had no hand in giving marks in the practical exam. The local education department is investigating the matter. Three officers of the department visited the school, spoke to the headmaster and other teachers and during the searches conducted in the residential school, several mobile phones were seized. The use of mobile phones is prohibited in this school.
Gopikandar’s Block Education Officer Surendra Hembram alleged that Kumar Suman had used casteist words against some students sometime back and a case has also been registered against him under the SC-ST Act.
Gopikandar Block Development Officer Anant Jha said that around 200 students study in the residential school and most of them were involved in the incident of thrashing of the teacher and the clerk. Jha said the teacher who was beaten up was the headmaster, but was later fired due to unknown reasons. The new headmaster is Ramdev Kesari. Jha pointed out that this could be the result of a tussle between the teachers.
Classes 9 and 10 have been suspended and all the students have been sent back to their villages. Some students alleged that the teacher gave them low marks and clerk Soneram Choure uploaded them on the JAC website.
The BDO said that the current headmaster of the school could not tell the marks of practical examination of mathematics and the date on which these marks were uploaded online. He said that prima facie it appears that the students have beaten up the teacher and the clerk just on the basis of rumours.
Local police station in-charge Nityanand Bhokta said that he had asked the school management to file a complaint, but he refused, saying it could ruin the careers of the students. Police said that neither an FIR was registered nor any complaint was lodged by the school management.
Tying a teacher to a tree and then thrashing him with sticks is a shameful example of the extent to which the education system has fallen in our rural areas. Many shameful faces are exposed in this video of teachers beating up, and each face has done a shameful act.
Shame on those students who beat up their teachers, insulted the teachers. Shame on those teachers who used students to take revenge for mutual enmity. This incident shows how smartphones, social media are being misused to blackmail and humiliate nowadays. There is no discipline in the school, no respect for teachers and no fear of police.
This incident is disturbing, disturbing. Who will say that these are the students and teachers of a country where Guru is given a status above God. What is this culture in which students thrash their teacher by tying them on a tree and make videos viral on social media to humiliate them. The whole society should think about this again and again.
