In a gruesome incident in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettru was killed with an ax on Tuesday night. Praveen has a chicken shop in Bellare and outside this shop three miscreants attacked Praveen. Praveen was returning home after closing his shop. The miscreants attacked with an ax and killed Praveen.

There are reports that after killing Praveen, the killers fled on a bike to the neighboring state of Kerala. The bike on which the killers were on had a Kerala number plate. After this frenzied murder, the anger of the people erupted on Wednesday. Incidents of stone pelting took place and the police had to lathi-charge. Not only this, the anger among the people was so much that even BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel could not escape it. His car was also attacked. In protest against this incident, BJP workers also resigned collectively.

Karnataka Police is engaged in the investigation of this entire matter. Searching for the hidden motives behind this gruesome murder. On the other hand, local BJP workers allege that Praveen Nettru was attacked by Islamic fundamentalists due to a post he wrote on his Facebook page on June 29. Praveen in his Facebook post had condemned the murder of tailor Kanhaiyalal in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Praveen, in his Facebook post, supported the remarks made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma against Prophet Mohammad. At the same time, the police is also investigating Praveen murder case from other angles. Police argue that a youth named Masood was attacked in Bellary on July 19 and died on July 21. Some of those accused of attacking Masood are known to Praveen. Masood was a resident of Kasaragod in Kerala. The bike that Praveen’s killers came from had Kerala’s number on it and after the murder the killers have fled towards Kasaragod. That’s why the police feel that Praveen’s murder may be revenge for Masood’s murder.

Additional DGP (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said, “We are looking into all these angles apart from these two angles in this case. We are keeping an eye on everything that has come out in public. We are looking into all the facts due to which this massacre was carried out.

With the evidence that has come out so far, there is no doubt that Praveen’s killers had come from Kerala and they ran back after committing the murder. Karnataka Police has sought the cooperation of Kerala Police to nab the killers. Six teams are engaged in solving this case and so far 15 people have been arrested for questioning.

Local BJP workers in Dakshina Kannada district are extremely angry with their leaders. State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel had reached the vehicle in which angry protesters overturned. BJP workers were asking how a popular youth leader like Praveen Nettaru was brutally murdered in Karnataka despite the BJP government being in power. Nalin Kumar Kateel had come to meet Praveen Nettru’s family to console him. But a crowd of thousands of people surrounded his car. Things became such that Nalin Kumar had to return without meeting Praveen’s family.

Praveen’s body was wrapped in saffron cloth. Thousands of people gathered for his funeral. Most of the people were wearing saffron clothes and carrying saffron flags. Flowers were showered on Praveen’s body and slogans of Praveen Zindabad were raised. A bandh was called in Bellare, Puttur, Sulya and Kadaba. Schools and colleges were closed there on Wednesday.

A large contingent of security forces has been deployed in the district to prevent communal violence. State BJP general secretary C.T. Ravi said the Karnataka government would teach a lesson to the jihadis and the killers would not be spared. He alleged that several Hindu leaders have been murdered in the last few months.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai promised that Praveen’s killers would be arrested soon. He said that the murder seems to be part of a pre-planned conspiracy. BJP workers and Hindu organizations have accused SDPI and PFI of being behind this brutal murder.

Hindu organization Shri Ram Sena leader Pramod Muthalik raised the question that why is the BJP government not banning PFI? Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi clearly said that in the initial report, SDPI and PFI have come to the fore behind Praveen’s murder. He alleged that the Congress and other opposition parties are promoting the activities of PFI and SDPI, which is encouraging such organizations.

Now the question is why are the supporters of BJP in South Karnataka so angry with their own government? Why are they linking Praveen’s murder in Bellare to Muslim fundamentalists? Actually there is a long list of such cases in Karnataka. On April 22 this year, a 22-year-old boy named Chandru was murdered. After this, 25-year-old Dalit youth Vijay Kamble was murdered in Kalaburgi because he was about to marry a Muslim girl. Earlier on February 20, Bajrang Dal worker Harsha was brutally murdered in Shivamogga. Harsha was killed because he used to vigorously raise the issue of Hindus. That is why the anger of the people of Karnataka erupted over the killing of Praveen.

I think such incidents are a big challenge for the BJP government of Karnataka. BJP leader C.T. Ravi is right that such incidents were happening even when Congress was in power, but BJP had promised security to the people. Everyone was guaranteed security. So now that guarantee has to be fulfilled. Otherwise people will have to face displeasure like this. Islamic fundamentalists are already threatening to behead those who support Nupur Sharma. So Karnataka Police should be alert. (Rajat Sharma)
