Punjab News: Announcing major organizational reforms, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday said it will now follow the ‘one family, one ticket’ principle in elections and ensure that half of its candidates are below 50 years of age. The changes announced by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal were due to the party’s poor performance in the last Punjab assembly elections and discontent against Badal’s leadership. He said that if the SAD comes to power in the next elections, then the post of presidents of the boards at the state and district level should be given to the party workers.

New leadership will come at the top level

Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the members of the families of MPs and MLAs will not be considered for these posts. He said the party president would be eligible for two consecutive terms of five years each and then he would have to take leave for one term. “This will bring new leadership at the top level. Let us tell you that Sukhbir Singh Badal had dissolved the SAD organization a month ago on the recommendation of a committee. The SAD had won just three seats out of a total of 117 in the February assembly elections.

Sukhbir Singh Badal is the president of SAD since 2008.

A party leader, however, said the new changes would come into effect only when a formal change is made to the SAD’s constitution. Sukhbir Singh Badal has been the president of SAD since 2008. Prior to him, his father and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal held this post. Sukhbir Singh Badal had dissolved the SAD organization a month ago on the recommendation of a committee. The committee had analyzed the reasons for the party’s defeat in the elections. The SAD had won just three seats out of a total of 117 in the February assembly elections. Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the organization will be reconstituted by November 30 through elections in the party.
