SSC Scam: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is questioning Trinamool Congress MLA Manik Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya appeared in the ED office on Wednesday morning. Bhattacharya, former chief of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and MLA from Palshipada in Nadia district, has been summoned for questioning about his alleged involvement in the teacher recruitment scam. A source in the investigating agency gave this information.
Arpita Mukherjee’s flat searched
Sources said ED officials are waiting to conduct a search operation at the flat of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, in Belgarhia area. Sources said that the keys of Arpita’s flat are not available and ED officials are trying to trace any key holder nearby. He said that the Central Police personnel were waiting on the ground floor of the building while the search operation was going on at Arpita’s other flat in the town.
The house was searched on 22nd July
Sources further said that Bhattacharya was asked to reach the ED’s office at the CGO campus in Salt Lake at 12 noon, but he reached there only at 10 am. The officials of the central agency had searched Bhattacharya’s house on July 22 and asked him to appear before the agency for questioning.
Received more than Rs 20 crore
Meanwhile, sources said that West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee were taken to ESI Hospital in Joka for medical examination. Later both were brought back to the ED office for questioning. The ED had seized cash, jewelry and foreign currency worth over Rs 20 crore in searches on Mukherjee’s premises on Saturday. Chatterjee was in charge of the education department at the time of the alleged teacher recruitment scam in government schools and aided schools. Later this department was taken away from him. The ED had arrested him on Saturday in the case.
The minister and his aide have been sent to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody till August 3. The Enforcement Directorate is probing allegations of alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers by the School Service Commission.
