T20 World Cup: The host Australian team had to be knocked out in the Super-12 round of the T20 World Cup this year. The team that won the title last year was expected to perform well this year as well, but the opposite happened. In his own country, the Australian team did not get to play till the semi-finals of the tournament. Meanwhile, former Australia coach Justin Langer has given a big reason behind Australia’s defeat.
Why did the Australian team lose?
Former Australian coach Justin Langer feels that the team changes ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in the country did not help in such a big event and could have played a big role for Aaron Finch. But the team crashed out before the Super 12 stage. Defending champions Australia could not progress beyond the Super 12 stage, suffering their biggest blow from trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand, who defeated them by 89 runs in the opening group match on 22 October.
damage caused by change
Langer, who was Australia’s head coach, said, “It didn’t benefit Australia to make the changes, because they were giving new players a chance. It’s not necessarily the right way to go about it, but it’s working that way.” The team was successful in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE after four years before he left after a 4-0 Ashes win at home, he told sen.com.au.com.
Despite two major achievements to claim, Langer lost the support of his players due to his alleged management of the team and senior players were reportedly not happy with his style of coaching. The former Australia opener was offered a six-month contract renewal till the T20 World Cup, but the legendary cricketer turned it down. Langer’s assistant coach Andrew McDonald took the reins and has since gone on to a historic Test win in Australia and a T20 World Cup loss at home.
Langer felt that for a team to do well in the global tournament, many things needed to be done right. Langer explained that it was a great opportunity for the likes of young Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh to step up and perform better.
