T20 World Cup 2022: After the defeat of the T20 World Cup 2022, some big changes are set in the Indian cricket team. The wait for the Indian team, which has been waiting for the ICC trophy for the last 9 years, is still not over. Especially now the talk of snatching the captaincy from Indian team captain Rohit Sharma is at the top. From cricket fans to big cricketers, they want to see a new captain of the Indian team as soon as possible.

Former selector raised demand

Former India cricketer and former chairman of the selection committee Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that if he was the chief selector at present, he would have appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain of the team till the 2024 T20 World Cup. The focus is to start rebuilding the team from the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand. In the recently concluded T20 World Cup in Australia, India entered the semi-finals of the tournament by becoming the table topper from Group 2, winning four of their five matches.

Team India missed the title

But their quest to end their nine-year wait for the World Cup trophy came to a sudden halt and India suffered a massive 10-wicket loss to England in the T20 World Cup semi-final at the Adelaide Oval. Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to a win in IPL 2022, will captain the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand starting Friday in Wellington. The series will mark India’s preparation for the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024, which will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

Make Hardik the captain

“Look, if I were the chairman of the selection committee, I would have appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain till the 2024 World Cup. A new team should start rebuilding because the New Zealand series is going to happen within a week,” he said. Srikanth said in the ‘Match Point’ show on Star Sports, “You start preparing for the World Cup from today. You need to understand, it starts from 2 years back. So, what you want to do is try and test. Make all those mistakes for a year, then you build a team that by 2023 makes sure it is going to play the World Cup.”

Srikkanth also called upon India to identify all-rounders like Deepak Hooda who can play different roles in the T20 World Cup. You need more fast-ball all-rounders. Let’s see, 1983 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup, why did we win? We had a lot of fast bowling all-rounders and semi-all-rounders. So, recognize these guys – like Hooda, there are going to be many more players.”

Former India left-arm pacer and member of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team Irfan Pathan feels the team needs to build some leaders in the event of Pandya’s injury and not captaining the T20 side. Rishabh Pant will be the vice-captain in the T20 against New Zealand. Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop has highlighted that with the talent available in India, the selectors need to make the right choices while selecting the right players in the Indian T20 squad in future.
