T20 World Cup 2022: Team India captain Rohit Sharma has not been in form for a long time. When Rohit became the captain of Team India last year, his bat has not been doing well. Rohit’s form in the current T20 World Cup has also been a matter of concern. Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar has given a big statement on Rohit’s poor form.
Gavaskar furious at Rohit
Ever since Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy of the Indian team, his job as an opener has been to attack the bowlers early in the powerplays and lay the groundwork for the rest of the batsmen. But in the ongoing T20 World Cup, Rohit has not been able to make a big start for India in the power-plays. Though the Indian team has now qualified for the semi-finals, Rohit’s form will be a cause for concern, scoring 89 runs in just five matches at an average of 17.
Former India legend Sunil Gavaskar said, “The bowlers have achieved success in the tournament when Rohit is provisional and prevents him from opening the innings big.” Gavaskar further added, “But Rohit himself has created this blueprint to be bang on in the first 6 overs as the captain of the team. He can’t be seen moving the ball around. He’s always shot on the ball. But that pull shot on Australian grounds got him in trouble.”
Getting out on a pull shot
Gavaskar said, “We saw that even two years ago, he got out twice after scoring 40-50 runs (in Tests) playing pull shots. This has put him in trouble again. In the first six overs in the T20 format, Rohit was given a fielder. Have to take care and play the pull shot.” With India now set to face England in the semi-finals on Thursday to book a place in the final at the MCG on Sunday, Gavaskar expressed hope that Rohit will do his best with the bat and give him a chance to end the 9-year wait.
Now, these are the knockout stages. In the knockout stage, you can’t afford to experiment too much. You need to do your best. Let’s hope whatever Rohit does, he does well for the team.
