The Election Commission has announced the dates for the by-election to Khatauli assembly seat of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The Election Commission informed on Tuesday that voting on this seat will be held on December 5. The by-election is being held in this seat after BJP MLA Vikram Singh was disqualified from the legislature.
Twelve people, including BJP MLA Vikram Saini, were found guilty in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case. The MP-MLA court had sentenced all the accused including Vikram Saini to two years’ imprisonment. In view of this, the assembly membership of Vikram Saini was canceled recently. After this the Khatauli assembly seat was declared vacant.
By-election results will also come on December 8
By-elections will be held in Rampur and Khatauli assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, there is also a by-election in Mainpuri, a parliamentary constituency of UP. Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat is vacant after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Apart from this, by-elections on one seat each in Odisha, Rajasthan, Bihar and Chhattisgarh will also be held on December 5. Along with the results of the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, the results of these by-elections will also be declared on December 8.
In September 2013, communal violence erupted in western Uttar Pradesh after provocative speeches by leaders of some political parties. At least 60 people died in this and many people fled during the riots.
