UP News: Atul Rai, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP from Ghosi Lok Sabha seat in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, was acquitted by Varanasi MP MLA Court on Saturday. Rai was charged with rape, forgery, intimidation and under the Information Technology Act, and is currently in Naini jail.

The MP was acquitted of all the cases registered against him.

MP’s advocate Anuj Yadav told that Special Judge MP MLA Siyaram Chaurasia has acquitted MP Atul Rai from all the cases registered against him. Yadav said the court did not consider the victim’s statement to be credible and evidence could not be given on her behalf and the incident could not be proved.

Accused of rape by threatening to make video viral

It is noteworthy that on May 1, 2019, Atul Rai, a native of Ballia district and a former student of Uttar Pradesh College, Varanasi, had filed a case against him in other cases including rape. The victim had written in the Tahrir that Atul Rai took her to his flat in Chitaipur and raped her and made her photo and video, after which she started raping by threatening to make the video viral.

The MP surrendered in the court on 22 June 2019, since then he is lodged in Naini Jail in Prayagraj. Meanwhile, on 16 August 2021, before the Supreme Court, the victim and her friend and trial witness Satyam Rai committed suicide on Facebook Live, both of whom later succumbed during treatment.

Non-bailable warrant was issued against the deceased girl

A non-bailable warrant was issued against the deceased woman on August 2, before the incident of self-immolation. The girl was accused of registering her age differently in two different cases. In this case, the then SSP of Varanasi, Amit Pathak, was shifted from Ghaziabad to Lucknow. The Inspector-in-Charge was put on line, while the Investigator was suspended.
