Uttarakhand News: The Uttarakhand cabinet has decided to construct small underground tunnels to overcome the acute problem of parking in the hills. The proposal of the Public Works Department in this regard has been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami late on Wednesday evening. State Chief Secretary Sukhbir Singh Sandhu informed that the proposed underground tunnels will act as parking lots in the mountains.

This work is being done for the first time in the country

Giving detailed information in this matter, the Chief Secretary of the state said that Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Tehri Hydro Power Limited and Uttarakhand Hydroelectric Corporation Limited have been selected for the construction work of these tunnels. Before the construction of tunnels, their geological survey will be done. In another major decision, the cabinet also approved setting up of Uttarakhand Lantslide Mitigation and Control Centre. This will be the first institute of its kind in the country which will work to prevent and deal with landslides in this sensitive state.

What is the government’s plan regarding tunnel parking
State Chief Secretary Sukhbir Singh Sandhu told that the problem of parking is most challenging in the mountain on occasions like tourist season, Chardham Yatra. To solve this problem, the government has marked 180 parking spots across the state. Many of these sites are such where tunnels can be built inside the mountain on the lines of hydroelectric projects. For this, the government has nominated THDC, which builds Tehri Dam, Railway Development Corporation Limited, which builds tunnels in Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line and UJVNL, who build tunnels in Uttarakhand dams, have been designated as the executing agencies.

The Dhami cabinet also gave its approval to the proposal of relaxation in raising the height of the terminal of Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway project. The project was stalled since 2019 due to ambiguity regarding altitude. The Cabinet also decided to provide 100 acres of land free of cost to the Center for setting up a satellite center of AIIMS near Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar district. Apart from this, the cabinet also decided to impose tax on mobile companies setting up their towers in the state.
